When do most people decide to change their mattress and buy a new one?
The most common answer is actually during house moving, relocations or major renovations. It seems that only a minority do so otherwise, such as buying mattresses during cheap sales. However, if you often feel tired and lethargic in the morning, or you often toss around in the middle of the night, it is probably the bed telling you its time to change a new mattress. If you are using a spring mattress, you should change when you find that some spring coils have broken through the mattress padding and has poked through and exposing its sharp point. For foam mattresses, you know its time to change when you can feel the hardness of the floor or bed frame when you lie on it. And do not just change your mattress, give your bedroom a complete makeover by buying luxury bedding ensembles that does not cost a lot more than you imagine, such as Shabby Chic, Croscill etc.
Most quality mattresses can last at least eight years without loosing its firmness and comfort. This really depends on personal usage. For example, if you weigh heavier then the mattress may not last as long due to the extra stress and load it must carry. If you have kids that enjoy bouncing on the mattress, then minus another year of service life.
Foam mattresses have a shorter product lifetime compared to spring mattress, however their prices are also a fraction of the latter. Foam material tend to lose their resilience and elasticity much faster than spring coils. If we are going to compare the cost per usage year, you may find that this metric turns out to somehow similar for both types of mattresses. We do recommend you buy the best mattress for health you can afford, even if this decision requires a more hefty initial investment. This is because the better mattress will provide better support for your body and spine for many years, and gives you more energy to handle work throughout the day. If you have bought a low quality mattress, you may be getting a poor sleep and it will start showing signs of damage such as bursted seams, uneven sagging etc. If you can feel lumps and bumps in your mattress when you move your palms across the mattress surface, thats a sign that some parts of the mattress have started to break down internally and these uneven lumps may cause discomfort during your sleep.
Even if your bed mattress still feels comfortable after many years of use, you may still like to change to a new one. We tend to get used to and adapt to our surroundings. You may not realize your sleeping discomforts until you tried sleeping on a good bed such as during a hotel stay and finally find out the difference between the comfort levels of the hotel bed mattress and your old cheap mattress.
